Hydration vs. Moisture: How To Tell the Difference

by Lauren Ardagh on Jul 27, 2022

Winter is here which means skin can get crazy. It's either cold or a weird sunny days in Cape Town so even though you haven't switched things up, your skin is getting affected. Yes I know it means having to do something which is annoying. However, if you love glowing skin like we do you can do a lot to save your skin from winter with the help of skincare, hydration and/or moisture.

While hydration and moisture may sound the same it's not. There are differences and the key thing is to know the differences, which will help you figure out what your skin needs.

What is hydrated skin?

It's natural to think of water when you hear the word 'hydration'. Hydrating your skin means increasing its water content. If your skin is dehydrated, it can appear flaky, dull and dry. Hydrated skin is smooth, radiant and has an even tone.
It's key to get moisturising ingredients (humectant) into your skincare routine. Add ingredients like Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid in your skincare routine as they replenish the skin with water. Our Hydration Booster is the perfect winter sheet mask for this.
What is moisture?
Moisturisers, which rehydrates the top layer of skin cells and seal in the water, are one of the best ways to treat dry skin. These also lock in the moisture of the skin which is key in winter. Lack of moisture can happen as a result of frequent bathing, use of harsh soaps, or certain medical conditions. And for those in colder climates, it can stem from cold, dry winter air.

It's vital that you include ingredients that lock in the moisture (occlusive) like Argan Oil, Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil and Beeswax. We love the Skin Soother in winter too for this as it's also infused with Argan Oil.

Beauty Tips:

Remember if you have oily skin then don't have too many occlusives in your routine as this can cause breakouts. Lucky for you guys the CBD Leaf Extract in our masks helps with this.
